The Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran was founded in 1945 in the Republic of Mahabad, a sovereign Kurdish homeland that lasted for a brief 11 months before it was consumed by Iran with backing from the Soviet Union. That brief existence gave the Kurds a taste of what it was like to be independent, and it fuels their aspirations even today. [2005]
