Madrid, Spain

Well into the modern era, the most prominent part of Europe's urban landscape was the church. Its steeples, bells, and domes, many holding crosses aloft, rose above low-rise skylines and lifted the eyes of earth-bound mortals to heaven. Salient parts of the landscape they were, reminding everyone of the Roman Church's power. [2009]
