Beside the chapel that bears her name, Our Lady of Carmen stands serene in the middle of an offering plate surrounded by dancing descendants of the ancient Mayans. It's Sunday, and the scene is partly for tourists, but it also reveals an attempt to fuse Maya paganism with Christian devotion. More than two dozen dancers took part in the ritual. [2013]
