About one in ten citizens of Northern Ireland understands at least a little Irish, but no one speaks it as their only language. Linguistic colonialism has been ravaging Irish culture for centuries. Though 1998 made a difference, the autochthonous tongue of Ulster has not attained the status accorded other Celtic languages in the Isles. [2009]
