Resafa, Syria

Inside his tent, an Arab sheikh presides over a clan gathering in the Syrian Desert. Not that anyone in the clan lives there. The desert's function now is to provide a setting for families to reunite and affirm the wisdom of traditional ways. Nearby Resafa (a city called Sergiopolis under the Byzantines) was abandoned centuries ago. [1993]
