Goldsboro, Pennsylvania,USA

Goldsboro nestles between the Newberry Township hills and the Susquehanna River. Not far off shore lies an island that hosts a nuclear power station: one that went berserk on this date in 1979 precipitating the evacuation of 144,000 people. The name of the island is shared by the nuclear installation. What is it? [2007]

  3. Right on. Not an event to be forgotten, especially if you are from Harrisburg, PA (as I am).

  4. How could some of us forget that cursed name! At the time of the catastrophe, my wife and I were hourly following the weather reports, ready to jump in the car and leave for the west with our two infant daughters. Cursed be the nuclear industry! Years later we often passed Harrisburg on our way to Cornell University to visit our 2nd daughter, but we never stopped there for any tourism whatsoever. You wouldn't catch us eating, sleeping or buying anything there! Vaison.
