Lucerne, Switzerland

The Swiss Guard used to protect the French royals. Around 800 were massacred during the French Revolution. To honor "the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss" (in Latin), their home country hewed out a sandstone cliff in Lucerne, and created the nineteenth century's most moving memorial to fallen heroes.
